Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Buda Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Buda typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common Clopay drum sizes and cable lengths on our trucks for same-day completion. Most jobs take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on site. You’ll usually discover the problem when the door hangs crooked, slams shut, or won’t lift at all - often after one cable has frayed through or a drum has slipped its set screws.

We’ve replaced these parts on Clopay doors all over Buda, from the older homes near downtown to newer builds out in Whispering Hollow. The Texas heat cycling and occasional hard freeze do the same thing every time: the cables dry out and the drums work loose. Tell me what it’s doing. We’ll go from there.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay builds their doors across several series, and the cable and drum setup changes with the door weight and track configuration. The Classic Collection and Coachman Series use lighter 8-inch drums with 1/8-inch aircraft-grade cable. The Gallery Steel and Grand Harbor lines need heavier 10- or 12-inch drums with 3/32-inch or 1/8-inch cable depending on door width. The Canyon Ridge and Avante modern glass doors use proprietary drum assemblies that Clopay sources directly.

To identify your part, check the sticker on the interior panel edge for the model number starting with “CWD” or “GR.” The drum itself carries a casting number near the hub. We carry quality aftermarket equivalents for the Classic and Gallery lines that match OEM specs at a lower parts cost. For Canyon Ridge and Avante, we source factory-matched drums to protect the warranty. Carl Dutton and our crew have learned which aftermarket drums seat properly on Clopay shafts and which ones walk off after six months. That difference matters.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs crooked when closed. One cable has stretched or the drum has slipped, so the door lifts unevenly. The side with tension pulls higher; the slack side lags. Left alone, this twists the door panel and damages the track.
  • You hear a loud bang from the garage, then the door won’t move. A cable has snapped under load. The remaining cable carries full door weight until it too fails. In Buda’s summer heat, dried cables snap more often than owners expect.
  • The cable looks frayed or has broken strands near the bottom bracket. This is where the cable flexes most through each cycle. Fraying means the cable is past due; it will fail, and the only question is when.
  • The drum wobbles or grinds when the door operates. Set screws have loosened, or the drum bore has worn oval from running loose. A wobbling drum chews the cable and can throw it off the groove entirely.
  • The door slams hard when closing or feels heavy to lift manually. The cable has come off the drum, so the spring system is no longer balanced against the door weight. This puts dangerous load back on the opener or your back.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Buda
Cable & Drum Replacement (standard Clopay) $130-$250
Dual cable replacement with drum inspection $180-$340
Track realignment (if needed from cable failure) $120-$240

The $130-$250 range covers one cable and matching drum replacement with labor. If both cables have aged out or the failure has damaged the second drum, we quote the full job before touching a wrench. We use galvanized or stainless cable rated for Clopay door weights, and we torque the drum set screws to spec with a calibrated driver. Every cable and drum replacement carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. The price we state is the price on the bill. No surprises.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check a homeowner can make: with the door closed and the opener disconnected, look at both cables. If one is slack, dangling, or off the drum, stop there. Do not run the door.

What goes wrong with DIY on this part: the door is under spring tension even when it looks still. Releasing a drum set screw without supporting the door weight can drop the door or whip a cable. The cable anchor points at the bottom bracket sit under several hundred pounds of load. We’ve been called to Buda homes where a well-meaning repair made things worse and cost more to undo. If you’re comfortable with the risk and have the right winding bars and clamps, you already know who you are. If you’re unsure, call (737) 510-7891. We’ll quote flat, show up with the part, and finish in one visit.
